Right now I'm doing low carb dieting. I'm doing very well and so far have been able to keep my carbs down to the level recommended.
But I have one problem with low carb eating. I really like to drink beer. I'm in the habit of having a beer or two in the evening. I've given up my beer but I want to have a relaxing drink or two in the eventing that will be compatible with my low carb diet.
What's the best low carb alcohol choice?
You did the right thing when you gave up beer. It's very hard to integrate beer into a low carb lifestyle. Your average serving of beer or cider will totally blow your carb count at 12g and 15g carbs respectively. (Our favorite light beer, Amstel Light, is indeed light at only 5g carbs per bottle.)
The best low carb alcohol is probably red wine. At 1.75g carbs per serving, you can have a couple of glasses of red wine - the flavinoids in it are good for you.
If you prefer mixed drinks, stay away from flavored liqueurs and even flavored vodkas. A lot of sugar goes into them. The bloody mary is the classic low carb cocktail - full of vitamins and served with a celery stick. What more could you ask for?
Now that we've given you all this advice - be careful you don't drink so much that you throw caution to the wind and start indulging in anti-low carb behaviors. Getting a little tipsy is the downfall of many dieters.
