A Miami Beach cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Agatson, invented the Southbeach diet plan and published a book called The Southbeach Diet. Dr. Agatson was trying to create a diet plan that was both healthful and at the same time would be easy for his Southbeach patients, or anyone else, to follow.
Though it's sometimes considered to be a low carb diet, the Southbeach diet focuses more on healthy sources of carbs and fats. The Southbeach diet is more of a controlled carb approach than a low carb diet. Many consider the Southbeach Diet to be better and healthier than the Atkins Diet.
The main tenet of the Southbeach diet is that carbs are the primary source of your body's energy. Simple carbs get burned quickly, leaving you shaky and hungry later on even though your body has ample supplies of fats and proteins to convert into energy.
The Southbeach diet eliminates simple carbs and allows complex carbohydrates that have a relatively low glycemic index or glycemic impact. Variations on the Southbeach diet or the low GI diet have been used to treat Type II diabetes in children.
There are several phases of the Southbeach diet.
First, most carbohydrates are completely banned. Next, low GI carbs and complex carbs are introduced. The goal is to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy diet for life. Like many low carb diet plans, the Southbeach diet is more of a lifestyle change than just a weight loss plan.
Though there are no portion limits in the Southbeach diet, uncontrolled eating will not result in weight loss.
