i don't understand why the southbeachdiet is so popular. how is the southbeachdiet different from the atkinsdiet? why are there so many people on the southbeachdiet? is the southbeach diet the same as other lowcarbdiets?

Dear Southbeach Jenny,

The South Beach Diet is similar to the Atkins diet in some regards (click the links for our complete write-up of each).

The South Beach Diet is more of a "controlled carb" approach. After the initial phase in which carbs are greatly limited, the South Beach Diet allows complex carbohydrates with a low glycemic index. The South Beach Diet also encourages fresh, whole foods like whole grains and raw vegetables. Fat sources in the South Beach Diet are generally unsaturated and from healthy sources like fish.

The Atkins diet discourages carbs period. When on the Atkins diet, protein generally comes from sources that also contain a lot of saturated fats, such as red meat and dairy products. Even though this type of low carb diet doesn't seem to negatively impact the body's cholesterol levels, many nutritionists and dieticians are hesitant to recommend a diet that consists of so much "unhealthy" food.

To answer your question of "why the southbeachdiet is so popular," we can offer some guesses.

The South Beach Diet is heavily marketed. Each year, the South Beach Diet company spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising.

The South Beach Diet is more traditional. Where the Atkins dieter might snack on a chunk of cheddar cheese and a couple slices of bacon, a South Beach dieter is more likely to have foods you'd likely think of as diet foods, like a salad, or carrot sticks and cottage cheese. The South Beach Diet focuses on unsaturated fats and whole foods.

The South Beach Diet combines the best aspects of the traditional low-fat and low-calorie diet (healthy foods) and a low-carb diet (cut carbs, focus on low-GI carbs).
